“Ann is known for her expressive and figurative prints, drawings, paintings and sculpture. Ann passionately captures the spirit of her subject matter whether as a printmaker, metal sculptress, or painter. Be prepared to be viscerally swept up into her art.” — S. Dempsey
Art Medium:
Artists do not usually use just one medium. My background is based in life drawing. I am currently working primarily in steel sculpture and oil painting. I also, work with a master print maker several times a year.
How did you get started in art?
I am a right brain creative person and have been expressing myself with drawing and painting, since I could hold a brush or pencil. I tried several types of jobs and ended up with a bachelors degree in art, at the University of Redlands. From then on all my avocations were around or with art. I taught art to children for twenty years.
Why did you choose that medium?
I choose a media according to my own perceptions of my creative needs. I learned how to weld about 14 years ago. I concentrated primarily on welding and printmaking. I started painting with oil on canvas in 2002. The painting to be displayed at the RAA combines my love for the nude and my interest in color. The theme the bathers has historical significance in the last several centuries of painting.
Where do like best to do art?
I can and will do art anywhere. I am very interested in outdoor plein air painting. At this time I have my own studio next to my home, which is a wonderful place to do art.
Who are your mentors?
My art history background at the University of Redlands was in the Renaissance. Some of my mentors, but definitely not limited to are Kleemiro, Chagall, Arthur Dove, Bacon, Tamayo, Botero, Basquiat, R. Beardon, L. Nevelson, L. Crasner, E. Hess, Sandra Rowe, J. Brownfield.
Who inspires you?
Each creative artist has a vision expressing herself through her artwork; thus the name of the show Imitation is Suicide. Nature, the human figure, animals, and ideas inspire me.
What are your challenges in art?
Where to put it all!
What are your best art successes?
I am an accomplished print maker and sculptor. I very much enjoy painting the large painting to be displayed at the RAA.
